Chances are, you’ve probably heard about a commonplace book. You might already keep one (in that case, not sure why you’re reading this essay, but I’m not gonna stop you).

But if you are new to what a commonplace book is, then I’m pleased to introduce you to the concept and convince you why you should start keeping one.

Many people will have different definitions of what a commonplace book is.

But in general, it is a book where you collect and record tidbits of information you find interesting. Music lyrics, quotes, passages in books, ideas, etc. The goal for your commonplace book is to remember, for you, anything you found enlightening as you go about your day.

It’s not a daily journal, but rather a place you can get inspiration from later on.

This is invaluable to creatives.

Okay, now that you know what a commonplace book is, how does it benefit you?

1. Remember what inspired you

As previously mentioned, commonplace books are great to remind you what inspired you.

You can easily return to these pieces of information you recorded to remind yourself what got you inspired. This is especially useful when you find yourself in a rut and unable to create.

2. Save hours on research

This is especially pertinent for writers.

Of course, this works for any other creative, but for writers, recording the thoughts and information you have gleaned from going about your life is helpful. There have been moments I have gone through my commonplace book to inspire me on what I want to write about.

Especially when I’m feeling stuck.

3. Find unexpected connections

When flipping through my commonplace book, reading the quotes, passages, and notes I’ve made while going about my day, there have been many moments I’ve made connections where I didn’t think there were connections.

It doesn’t matter how you decided to start a commonplace book.

Though I love to handwrite in a pocket notebook (3.5in x 5.5), digital can work too. Use whatever you can to record what you found insightful and interesting throughout the day. Then index those where you can, so you can come back to them later.
