Reflecting on Week 04 of 2025

What I accomplished
This week was intense. I did my best to achieve every goal that I set for myself. I was ambitious. Even though I didn’t hit the nail on the head every day, I managed to meet all my goals.
Writing
At the beginning of the year 2025, I made a goal to write 250 words a day.
No. Wait. I actually made a goal to write a 1,000 words a day.
I realized that wasn’t possible. Having a full-time job I must focus on before anything else, the goal of writing 1,000 words a day, became cumbersome. So I dialed it back to 500 words a day.
500 words also proved to be too much.
Not a surprise. 500 words a day is a lot.
So I lowered the goal to 250 words a day. A much more achievable goal I could reach without burning myself out. 250 words is just enough to make progress on a short story, which is the goal.
To just write, every day, and get better.
And what is my short story about?
I made substantial progress on a fantasy short story about the main character of my main novel. This short story is a slice-of-life story set in a fantasy world.
The goal of this short story is to offer some insight into the culture and past of the MC (main character). I didn’t want to break the tone of the main novel. The short story is still interpersonal but set in a different environment than the main novel.
I don’t want to give too much away, but the story is about a non-human, lesbian MC who runs into a series of unfortunate events.
Design
I continued to create a project a day.
I’ve been happy with my progress and want to learn the ins and out of Affinity Designer 2 and Affinity Photo 2. There is a lot more that I can learn.
Here are is what I created for this week:

Illustration
I did some gesture drawing but didn’t complete any big pieces.
Drawing is hard. It can be a discouraging process. But I know if I keep at it I will get better. It’s a matter of time, consistency, and deliberate practice. I’ll need to make more of a habit of posting my sketches.
What I learned
For Week 4 of 2025 I learned that prioritization is a must if I want to see more success. Focusing on one thing before moving on to the next does wonders for my productivity. I need to remember that for next week.
Goals for next week
- Writing: Continue to write at least 250 words a day. Don’t worry about finishing the first draft. Enjoy the process.
- Design: Continue to create a design a day for the 100 Days Of Graphic Design challenge. Don’t miss a day no matter what.
- Illustration: Draw for 15 minutes a day. Doesn’t matter what. Just draw.
